Orchard Primary School

We would like to make you aware of Benedict’s Law, a new allergy-safety requirements for schools in England which will come into effect from this term.

The new requirements aim to ensure that schools have consistent procedures in place to protect children with allergies and to respond quickly in an emergency.

As part of our commitment to keeping every child safe, we are strengthening our allergy-awareness arrangements across school. This includes:

- Ensuring staff have appropriate allergy awareness and emergency response training.
- Improving procedures for identifying and managing pupils with allergies.
- Ensuring pupils with known allergies have appropriate individual healthcare and allergy action plans.
- Having access to spare adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) for use in an emergency, where appropriate.
- Working closely with parents and carers to keep medical and allergy information up to date.

How parents and carers can help
Please let the school office know as soon as possible if your child:

- Has developed a new allergy.
- Has had a change to an existing allergy.
- Has been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen).
- Has received an updated allergy action plan or other relevant medical information.

If your child has prescribed medication that needs to be available in school, please ensure that it is in date, clearly labelled and provided to the school in accordance with our medication procedures.

We also ask all families to support our allergy-safety approach by not sending food into school for children to share, unless this has been specifically agreed with the school.

For KS1 (Reception, Year 1 & 2) fruit is supplied on a daily basis which is provided to them at break periods.

Allergy safety is a shared responsibility, and by working together we can help ensure that all children, including those living with severe allergies, can learn, play and participate safely at school.

Thank you for your continued support.
